End of Game Situations

Every Wednesday practice ends with 10 minutes of end-of-game situations. The team that practices these wins the close games.

Situations We Rehearse

  • Down 3, 12 seconds, must foul or play it?
  • Down 2, 8 seconds, our ball, SLOB.
  • Up 3, 8 seconds, opponent's ball — foul to give? Defensive set?
  • Tie game, 4 seconds left, full-court BLOB.
  • Catch-and-shoot to tie at the buzzer — what's the look we want?

Rules of Thumb

  • Foul up 3 with under 6 seconds — once we have a foul to give.
  • Take the open 2 to tie if we have the better defense — don't force a 3 with a poor look.
  • Never call timeout after a made basket if we have a runner who can push.
