Phil LaScala served as the Varsity Boys Basketball Head Coach at Lake Forest High School (LFHS) for 20 highly successful seasons. Appointed as the head coach in 2005, LaScala transformed the Scouts into a dominant North Suburban Conference powerhouse, retiring in 2025 as the winningest basketball coach in the school's history. Over nearly two decades on the sidelines, he built a culture defined by relentless effort, high-level player development, and community pride.
LaScala famously prioritized a "teaching-first" approach to coaching, treating every practice and game as an opportunity to build real-world character. He fostered an inclusive, family-style culture by pairing senior varsity leaders with underclassmen to build long-term mentorship. His commitment to maximizing his players' potential prepared numerous athletes for the collegiate level — including seven Division 1 players.
Before arriving at LFHS, LaScala began his teaching and coaching journey in 1997 at Mount Carmel High School, coaching both baseball and basketball. Outside of his basketball duties, he is a dedicated business teacher at Lake Forest High School, consistently motivating his students to be "relentless in the pursuit of success." Even after stepping down from his basketball head coaching role in 2025, LaScala continued to lend his leadership to the school's sports landscape by joining the Scouts baseball program as an assistant coach. He is an alumnus of Benet Academy and holds degrees from Eastern Illinois University and Benedictine University.
